- An Overview of DFS Group
Created in 1960, DFS has grown to become the world's largest travel retailer. Though it began as a chain of luxury airport shops, DFS under then-owners Robert Miller and Charles Feeney was able to secure the exclusive concession for duty-free sales in Hawaii, which allowed them to focus on the emerging Japanese traveling consumer. Translating these agreements into other countries allowed DFS to grow and innovate, and the company now operates duty-free stores both in and away from airports, as well as large downtown "Gallerias" throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. In 1996 Mr. Feeney sold his stake in the business to Louis Vuitton Mรถet Hennessy (LVMH), and the company is now jointly owned and run by LVMH and Mr. Miller.
