LIZ CLAIBORNE, INC.

Liz Claiborne, Inc. was started in 1976 with the goal of entering an essentially untapped market and offering fashionable, well-fitted professional apparel to women at a time when females were entering the workforce in high numbers.  Liz Claiborne and her partners looked to provide apparel of the quality and style of Calvin Klein and Bill Blass at affordable prices for the working woman.  Because this was a new concept, the company also looked for innovation in its retail channels, creating specific "Liz Claiborne" merchandized areas in department stores nationwide.  With its fast growth, the company expanded its manufacturing facilities overseas in the late 1970s and went public in 1981 before becoming the first company founded by a woman to be listed on the Fortune 500.

Since its inception, Liz Claiborne Inc. has expanded to manage a portfolio of brands, designing and marketing for a number of retail-based premium brands as well as department store-based brands and cosmetics.
